Although only an estimated 30% of people have school age children, schools surely effect our local real estate market!  I could talk your ear off about education, but here's some links and info to help you... or let me know if you have questions or other criteria.

This page explains NC Schools.  For specific info on Wake County Public schools or other area schools, follow tabs above.

Public, charter, private, parochial and home school are the many options for education in NC.

I.  State Structure and Funding:

Public schools are funded at the state level and run by NC Schools Department of Public Instruction.
There are 115 public LEA/Local Education Agencies.  Most LEA's equal a county (100 in NC) but some are 15 cities alone as their own LEA.  For example, the Town of Chapel Hill in Orange County is an LEA separate from it's Orange County's School Board, funding and policies, etc.  Some LEA's in NC provide some additional funding at the local level, but not as material as it is in some areas of the country, such as Fairfax, VA.

Charter schools are funded by the State with public money also, but have their own Advisory Board. There are no vouchers or tax breaks for those who elect to have their children in private/parochial or home schools (which do not receive state funding.)  In 2011-12, 86.7% attend public schools, 2.7% in Charter schools, 5.8% in private/parochial and 4.8% are home schooled (most recent data I could find, but this data is before the charter school cap was lifted by NC legislation.)

"NC Virtual Public School online Courses" are becoming more popular and available free for public school children and those in NC military children.

II.  NC Public School Scores & Results:

Here's all the data and statistics you could want to drill down to each school or two page summary. For school performance, demographic and other data, please click HERE

NC Report Cards. Legislation recently required that Schools are now given a grade also. School Performance Grades are new in 2015 and should be taken with a grain of salt. To me, what is important is the growth and learning of every individual student. The flower over the "i" on my purple campaign sign is symbolic of focusing on growth and potential of each child. (end of soap box!)

North Carolina is very advanced and one of the top states in helping Exceptional Children and Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted or AIG children.  Maybe someday soon, we'll have policies and practices that grows each child's potential and a child can be "2E" double exceptional (okay- no soap box!)

NC has "
Credit by Demonstrated Mastery" and AIG is mandated by NC beyond most other states- thought there are loopholes in funding this!  After being on the Board of NCAGT/NC Associations for Gifted & Talented and also appointed by the State School Board Chairman to serve on the Governor's School Task force, I'm very familiar with this topic and will gladly answer any questions.
NOTE:  Areas around RTP have the 2nd highest PhD rate in the country and the scores reflect this in $ of AIG students in each school.
