For any NC School, search here for individual schools' student aggregate performance.
Please remember it is important how EACH child learns and grows.
If a school or system does not score well, it does not mean the school is not "good."
Best suggestion is to go tour the school and talk to the Principal to see if it is a "fit" for your child/ren

1. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System:

Established in 1909, (CHCCS) is one of two public school systems in Orange County, NC.  The district operates three high schools, four middle schools, ten elementary schools, a school for young people being treated at UNC Hospital and an alternative high school. These schools serve more than 12,000 students. CHCCS does not have the capacity problems that Wake County is experiencing; however, Smith Middle school is capped/over capacity and students are being reassigned to other local schools.

Assignment is done by address to one elementary, middle school and high school.  There is an option for a Dual Language Elementary Magnet School. They have some easily understandable maps to understand their school attendance areas.  There's even a link to help people find apartments in the school district.

CHCCS has the state's highest district-wide SAT score at 1,194, or 1,776 when the writing component is included. The state average is 1,008 and the national average is 1,017. This high average was attained while more than 85 percent of the district's eligible students took the test. Thirty-three percent of the district's students are identified as gifted.  Getting student data, diversity and other statistics are a little tricky to find on the webpage; however they have a great accolades section. For the 2010-2011 school year, CHCCS had one of the state's highest per pupil expenditures at $10,625.

2.  Orange County School System:

www.orangecountyfirst.com/content/aig-homeOrange County Schools makes its home in the county seat of Hillsborough, NC. Their school system serves 7,401 students and families of northern Orange County. The District is comprised of thirteen schools: 7 elementary including one year-round school of choice, 3 middle schools, 2 high schools and an alternative school.  Assignment is determined through their address based look-up tool.

Their website is amazingly easy to use. Academically and/or Gifted students are 14% of the population and there's many other differentiation programs in place.

3.  Durham County School System:

Durham Public Schools was formed in 1992 with the merger of Durham's previous two school districts and is currently the 8th largest school system in North Carolina. There are 54 public schools in the system serving over 33,000 students in 31 elementary (K-5), 9 middle (6-8), 2 secondary (6-12), 11 high (9-12), and 1 hospital school. Their school system goal is that every student will graduate prepared for a career, college and life -- and for one of the three Es – enlistment, enrollment or employment. The graduation rate of 79.6 percent in 2013 has consistently risen for the last six years, DPS students are going on to succeed in all walks of life, from community colleges, to universities, to the armed forces and straight into the workforce. DPS believes our schools are much more than data and numbers (but it is available.)

An interactive map will help determine the assigned base schools, elementary magnet, walk and priority zones and year-round school regions available for a specific address. There are 23 magnet schools with a wide variety of enrichment and programs.

All middle schools are "moving in the middle" to keep all students engaged so they graduate high school.  There is an effort to keep AIG middle school students engage also. After a significant gain in 2013, the average SAT score for Durham Public Schools students in 2014 fell slightly, putting it closer to the district’s five-year average, to a combined score of 1406.  Jordan High School had the top average SAT score in the district at 1610, topping the state average of 1483. One hundred percent of eligible students at Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College took the test

5.  Johnston County School System:

Johnston County Schools serves over 33,000 students.  Their graduation rate has climbed by more than 13 percent in the past four years, while our dropout rate has fallen by nearly 50 percent in the same period.  Every Johnston County school building provides state-of-the-art facilities for students, thanks largely to the community's support for four bond referenda, the most recent having been passed for $99 million in May 2007. These votes have been passed with overwhelming winning margins since school improvement efforts began in 1989. As result, the district has spent more than $400 million on construction projects - which has included the demolition and replacement of all of the district's 50-year-old, three-story buildings. in total, there are 54 schools consisting of 22 elementary schools, 13 middle schools, 10 high schools and 2 alternative schools.
